People with Disabilities Cautioned on El Niño Rains in Mombasa

With the looming threat of El Niño rains, stern warning has been issued to the people with disabilities (PWDs) in Mombasa, Kenya, urging them to take proactive measures.

El Nino threats to PWDs

Charity Chahasi, the Executive Director of Tunaweza Women with Disability, emphasized the heightened risks that PWDs face during such weather events, stating, "El Niño rains can pose serious threats to individuals with disabilities, and it's crucial that they are well-prepared and vigilant. Our primary concern is the safety and well-being of PWDs in the face of these unpredictable weather patterns."

She further explained the specific challenges PWDs might encounter, including limited mobility, difficulties accessing emergency shelters, and potential disruptions to essential support services.

Supportive environment for PWDs

Chahasi urged local authorities and community members to collaborate in ensuring the safety of PWDs, saying, "It's imperative that local authorities, community organizations, and the public work together to create a supportive environment for people with disabilities during these challenging times. We must prioritize their needs and facilitate their access to necessary resources."

With El Niño's reputation for bringing heavy rainfall and possible flooding to the region, Chahasi's warning serves as a timely reminder for everyone to be prepared and proactive in safeguarding the most vulnerable members of the community.

Early Warnings

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued warnings of heavy rainfall and potential flooding in various parts of Kenya over the coming weeks due to the El Niño weather phenomenon. While these rains are crucial for replenishing water sources and agriculture, they also pose a significant risk to vulnerable populations, including individuals with disabilities.

As Mombasa braces for the impending El Niño rains, the call to action from Charity Chahasi and Tunaweza Women with Disability underscores the importance of inclusivity and preparedness in the face of natural disasters.
